Mental Health Intervention
More than 1 in 3 high school students reported having persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, a 40% increase from 2021. According to a 2022 CNN article, depression and anxiety in youth doubled compared to pre-pandemic levels. Youth mental health had already been declining prior to the pandemic.
Mental health intervention remains a hot topic for both healthcare professionals and the loved ones of those suffering from various disorders. The social media insurgence has negatively impacted parents and educators who try to work with youth on appropriate use. To learn more, visit The Social Media Epidemic.
The connection between psychiatric drugs and acts of violence is a serious concern, especially in schools and communities where mental health support may be under-resourced. While privacy is crucial for individuals undergoing mental health treatment, there is also a need to address broader safety concerns, particularly when medications are not taken as prescribed or when withdrawal leads to negative side effects such as aggression or psychosis.
Balancing individual privacy with community safety requires a nuanced approach. On one hand, increasing access to mental health resources—counseling, therapy, and proper medication management—is essential. On the other hand, schools and communities must also be prepared with strategies to identify warning signs and intervene early, potentially through SEL programs, increased mental health education, or crisis intervention plans.
