Building Positive
Lifestyle Choices

Providing professional development that fosters social emotional learning (SEL) skills, to reduce youth violence through game-based learning.

About us

Our Vision

In August of 2007, my community was shaken to its core when my youngest son (19 years old) experienced a bipolar blackout that resulted in him violently attacking me (Charisse). Many families are paralyzed by their children’s concerning behaviors, which often result in youth violence.

  • 11.5% of 15,000 children are starting school without the social skills they need to learn or get along with others.
  • 1/5 adolescents suffer from at least one mental health disorders.

OUR VISION

Youth will demonstrate the value of making positive lifestyle choices.

OUR MISSION

YTS empowers youth to make positive lifestyle choices by providing skills and strategies to improve interpersonal communication and foster violence prevention planning that sustains personal, social, and academic success.

OUR VALUES

YTS’ core values are based on SEL competencies to provide skills necessary for success.

Risk & Protective Factors

Risk factors are the hurdles that hinder success and protective factors are shields to reduce the impact of the risk factor.

Mental Health Intervention

During the pandemic, depression and anxiety in youth doubled compared to pre-pandemic levels, according to the research.

Game-based Learning

Game-based learning can be particularly effective for motivating and engaging learners, creating active participation.

SEL is a process through which children and adults adopt the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set, and achieve positive goals, feel, and show empathy for others, establish, and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. We build upon the following 5 competencies: self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, relationships, and decision-making. We recognize that SEL skills and good mental health are critical in helping youth to make positive lifestyle choices. Most schools are teaching SEL, but the impact is not producing the desired results. To learn more, please visit SEL Impact.
